HPP to Bissel Cove

By Camilla Garrison

The Harbor Pond Post had until recently been based on Block Island (the location of Harbor Pond) and Providence, Rhode Island, the hometown of the Editor and family. Earlier this (actually last) year the Garrison family were looking at potential residences and secured a home in January. They were to move in June right after the two kids had finished school (they moved on the last day actually!). Move where you ask? Well to a place in Rhode Island called Bissel Cove, a small peninsula just outside of Wickford, which is a village in the town of North Kingstown.

From now on Bissel Cove will be one of the main locations of the Harbor Pond Post Headquarters and so far is has proven to be a very interesting place. If you have been reading for awhile now, you may recall the posts of turtle training in Crescent Pond and cat training just about everywhere. After moving out of the city, the wildlife in Bissel Cove was astounding. In a few short days there, Camilla spotted squirrels (less rabid), birds (more of them), cats (less stray), bunnies (adults and babies) and most importantly: chipmunks! She had never before in her life seen a live chipmunk, and was soon very intrigued. After a little research here and there, Camilla made a shopping list for the next trip to the grocery store it included a few different kinds of seeds and nuts.

After the first day putting the food out (shelled peanuts, sunflower seeds and a birdseed mix) Camilla checked back on the camera she had set up, and found that there had been some visitors that evening… A chipmunk of course but also a bluejay, a mouse, Tux the cat (just visiting, not for the food) and a raccoon (who stayed for a whole hour!). So a bit of advice if you are not wanting trash pandas and mice, is to put the food out in the morning for the day creatures only!

The second day, Camilla followed the little guy home (the chipmunk), and found out they were neighbors! This chipmunk’s burrow is right under a hill in the backyard. Look forward to chipmunk updates!
